SUDL’s West Campus (Sacramento) speech and debate team won the JV Policy Debate division at the Damus Hollywood Invitational, held in Sherman Oaks, CA on November 9, 2024. The tournament was attended by 208 student entries from 38 schools across 9 states.

The team of Dylan Fail and Zai Xiang won their first 5 rounds before losing their final preliminary round against a team from Damien/St. Lucy’s High School. However, their record of 5-1 qualified them for the finals. In the final round, Dylan and Zai rematched the Damien team and won on a 2-1 decision, giving them the championship. Dylan was also named the tournament’s top speaker and Zai was second speaker.

In the Varsity Policy division, fellow SUDL debaters Vivian Grant & Jada Price competed, finishing with 2 wins and 4 losses against a competitive slate of SoCal competitors.

The SUDL teams were supported by their coaches, Stephen Golberg and Serena Jones.
