
West Campus debaters celebrate their performance at City College in San Francisco.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — SUDL’s CK McClatchy and West Campus (Sacramento) high school debate teams sent a total of 10 students to the Western JV Novice Championship held at the City College of San Francisco on March 8, 2025. The tournament was attended by 175 student entries and 34 schools from 2 states.
From West Campus, Dylan Fail and Zai Xiang competed in JV Cross-Examination (CX) Debate and reached the semifinal round after a 4-1 finish in preliminary rounds and a 2-1 win in quarterfinals against the College Prep School. The duo of Fail and Xiang placed 4th out of 17 entries, with Dylan earning the 5th-place speaker award out of 33 competitors. Alden Phan and Daniel Khan also represented West Campus in JV CX, finishing 11th out of 17 entries, with Alden placing 16th in speaker awards.
In Novice CX, Sofia Yee earned the 24th-place speaker award out of 42 competitors.
From McClatchy, in the JV Cross-Examination (CX) debate event, Melia Coleman and Jada Price finished 5th out of 17 entries. Jada Price also earned speaker awards, placing 6th out of 33 individual speakers with impressive scores of 29, 29, 28.9, 28.6, and 27.5 out of 30.
The West Campus (Sacramento) team would like to extend a special thank you to Stephen Goldberg, Serena Jones, Abigail Mike for volunteering to judge at the tournament. Their contributions were invaluable in making the event a success.
