BERKELEY, CA — 24 students from the Sacramento Urban Debate League, representing CK McClatchy and West Campus High Schools, had a strong showing at the prestigious Cal Invitational UC Berkeley tournament held in Berkeley, California, from February 15-17, 2025. The tournament was attended by 1,928 student entries from 195 schools across 22 states and 3 countries, making it the second-largest invitational debate tournament in the United States.

In the Novice Policy Debate event, the West Campus team of Hadeeqah Khan and Sofia Yee reached the final round and placed 2nd out of 33 entries. Yee also earned the 3rd place (of 66) speaker award in this event. Their WC teammates Alden Phan and Daniel Khan reached the quarterfinals and placed 8th out of 33 entries, with Phan earning the 6th place speaker award and Daniel Khan earning the 10th place speaker award. CKM’s Nora Taormina and Zoe Orowale finished 9th out of 33 entries, with both receiving high speaker point awards, ranking 8th and 7th, respectively, out of 66 speakers.

McClatchy debaters Miranda Grimberg and Bennett Witherell, competing in JV Public Forum, finished 7th out of 123 entries, delivering an impressive performance with a 4-1 prelim record and two elimination round wins before falling in quarterfinals. Additionally, Grimberg was ranked 26th out of 246 speakers in JV Public Forum.

The CKM JV Policy team of Melia Coleman and Jada Price also had a strong showing, finishing 15th out of 45 entries. In the Varsity Policy Debate event, Justine Chueh-Griffith and Abigail Mike finished with a hard-fought 3-3 record against teams from across the country.

  1. JV Policy Debate: Melia Coleman & Jada Price finished 15th out of 45 teams, with Jada Price earning the 23rd speaker award out of 89 speakers. Melia Coleman was the 30th speaker.
  2. JV Public Forum Debate: Miranda Grimberg & Bennett Witherell finished 7th out of 123 teams, after being seeded 10th in the preliminary rounds. Miranda Grimberg was the 26th speaker out of 246, and Bennett Witherell was the 59th speaker.
  3. Novice Policy Debate: Nora Taormina & Zoe Orowale finished 9th out of 33 teams, with Zoe Orowale earning the 7th speaker award out of 66 speakers and Nora Taormina earning the 8th speaker award. Nolan Galimba & Donovan Smith finished 32nd out of 33 teams, with Donovan Smith earning the 63rd speaker award and Nolan Galimba earning the 65th speaker award.
  4. Varsity Policy Debate: Kyle Delgado & Vivian Grant finished 71st out of 89 teams, with Kyle Delgado earning the 133rd speaker award out of 178 speakers and Vivian Grant earning the 154th speaker award.
  5. Varsity Public Forum Debate: The team of Stella Louney & Jane McCormack finished 147th out of 167 teams, with Stella Louney earning the 314th speaker award out of 333 speakers and Jane McCormack earning the 323rd speaker award. The team of Miles Murray & Jacob Wehling finished 159th out of 167 teams, with Miles Murray earning the 300th speaker award and Jacob Wehling earning the 265th speaker award.

  1. Novice Policy: Hadeeqah Khan & Sofia Yee finished 2nd out of 33 teams, Alden Phan & Daniel Khan were seeded 3rd out of 33 teams in prelims, Hadeeqah Khan was the 4th speaker out of 66, Sofia Yee was the 3rd speaker out of 66, Alden Phan was the 6th speaker out of 66, and Daniel Khan was the 10th speaker out of 66. Aiden Gum & Louis Jacobson finished 25th out of 33 teams, Louis Jacobson was the 50th speaker out of 66, and Aiden Gum was the 53rd speaker out of 66.
  2. Varsity Policy: Justine Chueh-Griffith & Abigail Mike finished 57th out of 89 teams, Justine Chueh-Griffith was the 139th speaker out of 178, Abigail Mike was the 146th speaker out of 178, and Dylan Fail was the 166th speaker out of 178. Dylan Fail & Zai Xiang finished 89th out of 89 teams, and Zai Xiang was the 176th speaker out of 178.
